Original Artwork Description
Warrumbungle Rise by Kylie Daniel
‘Warrumbungle’ is a Gamilaroi word meaning crooked mountains. Formed over countless millennia by an extinct shield volcano, the jagged landscape of the Warrumbungles is a spectacular sight.
Artwork Description
Standing in front of this large-scale abstract work, you will be drawn into an expanse that mirrors the immensity of the Warrumbungle National Park.
The sheer size of the canvas carries the weight of the land itself — vast, commanding, and almost impossible to contain.
Textured surfaces are meant to evoke the rawness of volcanic stone and weathered earth, whilst dark, grounding forms rise like distant peaks, their silhouettes anchoring the open plain. Above, the neutral tones dissolve into soft horizons, suggesting skies that stretch endlessly beyond sight.
The scale of the work makes this artwork quite the experience; it is not simply observed but felt, as if you have stepped into the silence of country, where solitude is profound and time feels suspended.
In its abstraction, the painting does not illustrate the Warrumbungles in fine detail, but conveys their essence — their rugged strength, their quiet reverence, and their ability to humble all who stand in their presence.
