The Genesis Bowl marks the beginning of a new chapter in my clay practice.
Created using the nerikomi technique — where coloured clays are layered, compressed, and revealed — this piece represents my first successful exploration of the process. The pattern is not applied to the surface, but formed through the body of the bowl itself, making the design intrinsic and permanent.
Bands of black clay, white clay, and earth tones move through the form like geological strata, echoing the same relationship to land, pressure, and time that informs my abstract landscape paintings.
Both sculptural and functional, The Genesis Bowl is the foundation piece for an evolving nerikomi collection within AROKA — a starting point from which future forms will emerge.
