The Ridge Cup
AROKA Clay Studio
The Ridge Cup is a sculptural extension of my landscape practice — land translated into form.
Thrown in dark stoneware and deliberately left handle-less, the cup is defined by a single, sharp ledge carved into its lower third. This ridge line is intentional — a tactile horizon that rests naturally in the hand. It is both structural and symbolic: the lower half grounded in earth, the upper half rising like a mountain crest.
The dark exposed clay represents terrain — dense, enduring, elemental. Above the ridge, a restrained application of Mayco Macadamia glaze mirrors the soft beige skies that feature throughout my paintings. The interior is finished in clear glaze, allowing the raw speckled clay to remain visible — honest, unmasked, and true to material.
Designed to be held rather than handled, The Ridge Cup invites pause. It honours the philosophy of waiting — too hot to touch, too hot to drink — encouraging ritual over rush.
Each cup is thrown and trimmed by hand. While proportions remain disciplined, subtle variations ensure every piece retains individuality within a recognisable form.
The Ridge Cup is not decoration.
It is land in the hand.
